Kermit Perry Held In Possible Beresford Case Sequel

Cannelton, November 25—(Special)

Elmer Roberts, 33, of near Tobinsport, is dead, a neighbor, Frank Gude, 70, is near death, both from rifle wounds.

Robert’s body and Gude, in a semi-conscious condition, were discovered at 7:40 o’clock this morning near a fence on the line between the Gude farm and the farm of John Beresford, a recluse who was found murdered in his barn lot last July.  Roberts had been shot in the left temple.

Thirteen year old Franklin Applegate, son of Mr. and Mrs. Applegate, tenants on the Beresford farm, came across the dead and injured man while riding a horse to a nearby blacksmith shop.

  •  Dragged by Horse

Gude clasped the reins of the boy’s horse and the boy guided the horse to the Gude home, a distance of about two blocks.  He summoned the strength to be dragged the entire distance although he had been shot through the chest about two inches below the collar bone, the bullet emerging from the back.

Young Applegate then rushed to notify his family.  A sister, Mrs Stiles, called Dr. EO Ferguson of Cloverport, who notified Coroner Harry Snyder, Troy, after he had dressed the wound.  Dr. Ferguson described Gude’s condition as critical.
